Faith MiddletonOnly two dozen interviewers in the world have ever twice received the "Pulitzer" of national broadcast journalism, The George Foster Peabody Award. WNPR interviewer Faith Middleton is one of them.
Stephen Mendelsohn is a key player at a small mortgage lending company
in West Hartford, where his difference is actually a benefit on the
job. He is focused, has strong attention to detail, and great follow
through skills. He does have challenges too; he has difficulty
multitasking and it is hard to interrupt his work, but his boss and
coworkers see his skills far outweigh these challenges.
Stephen has educated us on his perspective saying, "The autistic community
(including myself) rejects person-first terminology in describing
autistics. I am autistic (or Aspie, or Asperger autistic); I do
not "have" autism (or Aspergers). In the same vein, I am Jewish,
not a "person with (or who has) Jewishness." Autism, like
Judaism, is not an appendage to be "cured." It is part of who I
am and my identity as a person. Like my Judaism, my
autism/Aspieness is pervasive and colors just about all of what I
do. I would be a much different person if I were not autistic."
Stephen has provided many links on Autism which you can find in Able Lives:
Incorporated Episode 3 at the bottom of the page.
